The increase in the number of respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, cases at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, Conn., has created capacity difficulties at the facility. Children’s hospital officials have begun discussing the possibility of setting up a field hospital outside of the hospital’s main facilities if the surge of cases continues.

Infections of the respiratory tract are caused by RSV, which is easily transmittable. A person can contract the virus by coughing, sneezing, and coming into contact with surfaces contaminated with the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports an increase in positive RSV testing in the U.S., Official of Hospital said “The rise in cases has come ahead of the typical winter peak for such illnesses”.

The RSV virus is commonly encountered by children between the ages of two and four, health officials say. Infants and older adults with pre-existing conditions are more susceptible, especially those with severe symptoms.

Mark Kline, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Children’s Hospital New Orleans, said the virus remained stable this summer instead of disappearing like it normally does. Children’s hospitals report that other respiratory viruses are also contributing to hospitalizations, like rhinoviruses and enteroviruses, which can trigger serious illnesses.

Infection, prevention, and control director at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago Larry Kociolek describes the initial surge in RSV cases as occurring amid a particularly severe season of enteroviruses. According to him, pediatric hospitals have been strained to fill the void left by community hospitals shutting their pediatric beds.
